There are implications for our whole culture when fathering is absent. Fathering as a metaphor is absent at many levels. What then rushes in to fill the void left by this absence is violence and rage.

Some thoughts on Parenting in our time.

It was always understood in the oral Storytelling tradition that the parents were not the spiritual guardians of the children, but rather the physical guardians.   The parents’ job was to house, clothe, feed and protect the children from dangers, such as wild animals, floods, storms and so on.   This translates for us today as “don’t……get off the bus while it’s still moving” etc. The expectation that the Parents could or should be able to supply everything for the child is false and causes a huge amount of frustration for the child and the parents. I would like to disabuse both parties of this false and unreasonable expectation.
